A reworked version of Beaumarchais' play makes for an uneven production, on now at Soulpepper Theatre.

In 1996, Theatre Columbus premiered playwright Michael O’Brien’s “freely adapted” take on the famous Beaumarchais play The Barber of Seville, which was written in 1775. O’Brien’s version mixed in music from the 1816 opera of the same name by Gioachino Rossini, as well as original tunes by composer John Millard. The adaptation also propelled the story forward a couple centuries, with pop culture references galore. With Theatre Columbus co-founder Leah Cherniak at the helm, the musical ended the season with six Dora Award nominations (it won three) and plenty of critical acclaim.

Seventeen years later, Soulpepper Theatre is remounting this zany reimagination of The Barber of Seville, updated once again by O’Brien, Millard, and Cherniak. But, for some reason—the change in decade, or company, or sense of humour—whatever had made the original so magical, has faded, save for a few key performances.

Leafing through the history of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is like listening to a broken record. Every few years the groove locks on yet another proposal to expand the Island airport’s facilities. Until the arrival of Robert Deluce and Porter Airlines, most of these visions failed to take flight. Even ideas that became reality endured lengthy delays. In fact, the pedestrian tunnel between the mainland and the airport that’s currently under construction is a revival of a project briefly worked on during the mid-1930s.

While we wait to see if the staff study authorized by city council Monday night leads to the changes Porter Airlines CEO Robert Deluce desires (he’d like to introduce jet service, currently banned on the Island), here’s a look back at how the airport was born, and at previous proposals to alter the status quo.

It turns out that technology once only dreamed about in the back of comic books is now a reality: T-ray scanners may soon be deployed at an airport near you, and they know what you look like naked. Transport Canada is now reviewing a six-month trial of the security scanners, which are currently only voluntary and are used only when someone has set off the metal detector. The subject’s body is scattered with terahertz radiation, which—unlike X-rays—are believed to be harmless to human tissue. A technician reviews the scanner results in a windowless room, and the resulting images are anonymous, incredibly unflattering, and decidedly unerotic. Images can’t be stored, faces are obscured, and cameras aren’t allowed in the viewing room. Still, opponents say that peering at nude bodies is even too extreme for already-excessive security theatre, and may even run afoul of child porn laws. According to a spokesperson from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, however, 95% of travellers in the Kelowna, B.C., trial preferred it. If approved by Transport Canada and the Canadian privacy commissioner, the high-tech peepshow could be coming to Toronto airports soon.

In typical fashion, we’ve all been talking for decades about a fixed rail link between the busiest airport in Canada and the busiest surface transit hub in Canada, but despite near-universal agreement on its necessity, the project is still vapour. The $200 million+ Blue22 plan designed in the mid-’90s was originally slated for completion right about now, but endless disagreements about how to implement it, who pays for it, and whose property values it threatens have prevented any shovel from breaking ground.
About sixty major cities have dedicated premium rail transit from the airport to their city centres, and Europe and Japan have boasted solid systems since the ’80s, but Hong Kong’s Airport Express is brilliant in its sheer simplicity of use.

Now in service for a decade, the Airport Express plan had the luxury of being designed in conjunction with the massive, US$20 billion(!) Hong Kong International Airport project (both opened simultaneously). The system was designed to allow the trains to arrive directly at the terminal every twelve minutes, letting customers off right at the check-in area or picking them up from the arrivals lounge. The obvious benefit of this door-to-door service is not having to haul luggage very far, although free porters are available to help.
Tickets are easily purchased at touchscreen terminals for HKD$100 (about $17) by cash, credit card, or the ubiquitous Octopus card, the latter of which is accepted on almost all public transport in Hong Kong. Some airlines even support automated check-in, so travellers can grab their boarding passes while they wait for the train, which comes every twelve minutes.

The GTAA says that Toronto’s new Terminal 1 has been designed with the future rail link in mind [PDF], and it would arrive at the facility’s existing LINK tram station, which currently connects satellite parking lots by cable-pulled train to Terminals 1 and 3. Since there are no existing train tracks that go as far as the airport, a new spur would need to be built, likely from the Woodbine terminus, located about 3 km from Terminal 1.
Proposed stops on Toronto’s plan include Union Station, Dundas West TTC station (GO’s Bloor station), and one near Woodbine Racetrack at Highway 427. The Hong Kong line has also kept stops at a convenient minimum, and the trains feature an LED progress bar that shows where the train is in relation to the next station—something peripherally discussed for future TTC subway cars.

The trains on the Chinese link are manufactured by Montréal-based Bombardier, which builds TTC subway cars and is one of the bidders for the Transit City Light Rail Plan. These electric “A-Stock” trains are specifically customized for airport travellers, with wide aisles, generous leg room, and large baggage racks beside the doors. Large flatscreen panels announce current and upcoming stops and display short ads and lifestyle clips in between.
Brand-new track for Hong Hong means a faster, smoother ride—something that Toronto won’t be able to fully realize, since most of a 25-kilometre Pearson link would exist on the current rail corridor on segments owned by CN and GO Transit. Most conspicuously, the trip between downtown Hong Kong and the airport is dead silent. Unlike the subway or GO train, there is no significant side-to-side rocking or screeching, making for some welcome decompression time after a long day of travel. And, oh ehm gee, there’s WiFi.
Though running a shorter distance, a Toronto link would take about the same time—about 22 minutes from airport to downtown, versus 24 minutes for Hong Kong, and trains to Pearson would operate every 15 minutes. Transport Canada estimates that a direct rail link here would eliminate 1.5 million car trips in in the first year.

Like many other relatively new surface transport stations, Hong Kong’s Airport Express employs full glass safety barriers, which only allow ingress and egress when the train has fully stopped and do not allow access to track level. This type of barrier is one of the options examined by the TTC, but it will probably prove too expensive of a reno.
As for advertising, the Airport Express has it, but it’s restrained and relatively subtle. In every case, directional signage takes priority, comforting tourists and giving the platforms and trains a cleaner, uncluttered look.
Hong Kong’s system parallels those in many other countries, and there isn’t really much to complain about—the journey is basically seamless, comfortable, and idiot-proof. With talks ramping up again this summer about getting a Union-Pearson project back on track (albeit one likely to be operated by the private sector), planners could crib much from Hong Kong’s sophistication. But, jeez, let’s get on with it.
Federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion hints that Canadians may be ready for a federal election this fall. Still, Dion is hoping to receive a signed, notarized affidavit from every single Canadian of voting age assuring him that they are absolutely, 100 percent cool with having an election; otherwise it’s off.
The European Union’s environment commissioner has put forward a proposal to ban seal products from countries that “practice cruel hunting methods,” a move that would include products from Canada. Many people may agree with the EU’s position here but, without the great Canadian seal hunt, how else are we going to make snazzy vests like these?
Winnipeg police revealed that the 17-year-old who recently died after being hit with a taser was actually a suspect in a theft, and was carrying a knife. Don’t tasers have adjustable settings? If they’re gonna keep using them, maybe everyone can just turn their tasers down to, like, five-and-a-half.
Due to concerns over fraud, WestJet is discontinuing the credit card readers at its automatic check-in kiosks in Pearson Airport. Passengers were never required to use credit cards to check in, however, as one can use frequent flier numbers, reservation numbers, addresses or passports to get the job done, but that’s not nearly as exciting as having the chance of damaging your carefully cultivated credit.
Ontario is set to receive close to $7 billion from the federal government for infrastructure, it will be announced today. In Toronto, the cash is expected to be directed towards investments such as the Spadina subway extension and rail vehicles for the TTC (subways and streetcars). See, Mr. Dion? That’s how you prepare for an election in the fall.
Following the 2005 crash of an Air France A340, the airline is suing the GTAA for having a ravine at the end of runway 24L instead of a safe overrun margin. A coroner’s inquest into a 1978 crash at Pearson recommended installing a 300-metre safety apron, but nothing became of it. Air France continues to operate aircraft on runway 24L, but under the name Air Chance.
A passenger called the fuzz on a TTC operator yesterday following a suspicion that the driver was intoxicated. After unloading 30–40 passengers but then ignoring instructions from TTC control to pull over, the 48-year-old transit employee was issued a breathalyzer test and was both arrested and terminated. Signs the driver was drunk: bouncing the kneeling bus while doing a gangsta lean.
Illinois senator Barack Obama made history last night when he became the first African-American to lock down the Presidential nomination of a major political party. Come November, he’s likely to make history again when Americans choose between a guy who looks and acts like a rock star over a guy who looks and acts like someone’s sweet but sometimes crotchety grandpa.
If you’re looking to emigrate to Canada and can’t find the error in the phrase “the standard of living has increased,” worry not! Ottawa has dropped plans to make potential immigrants—including Americans—pass a tough English test. When asked for comment, Immigration Minister Diane Finley said via email, “omg lol u guyz!!1! Teh test wuz 2 hard 4 ppl, k?”
While we’re on the subject of TTC maps (as we often are), we might as well include the most wildly ambitious one of all. Reader Ryan Felix sent us his subway map, which he describes as a “fantasy map of the TTC” in 2050. Felix says it was “created in hope to influence people to become pro-transit, and to give a vision that Toronto can have a world-class transit system.”
The lines depicted on the map––sixteen total––turn Toronto’s subway coverage into a sprawling set of lines that more closely resembles New York’s system (or our Transit City on steroids), with stops everywhere imaginable––the Ontario Science Centre, Trinity Bellwoods, Sherway Gardens, Pearson International Airport, and Ontario Place, to name a few.
Now all we need is someone to create the same version in anagram form.
City backs away from plan to buy its own sidewalk food carts. And to think, it only took about ten thousand “what the hell is the city doing buying food carts, just let people buy their own damn food carts” comments and articles for the City to get the message! Toronto is getting more responsive every day, it really is.
Canadian Border Services Agency says that Vancouver International Airport needs more patrols and security checks. Surprisingly, the report does not mention anything about, and this is just off the top of Torontoist’s head, not tasering people until they die.
Oprah Winfrey to campaign for Barack Obama. However, it will all end in tears when Obama reveals that he’s not really running for President and he just made the whole campaign up.
Poverty increasing in Toronto. Thirty percent of all Toronto families are considered very low-income, nearly double what it was in 1990. But don’t worry, because housing prices are so high that these families never would have owned a home even if they were just somewhat poor!
Finally, speaking of poverty, child poverty in Canada remains unchanged after nearly twenty years. I guess Mel Hurtig is going to have to have to write another book. Luckily, Dalton McGuinty is on the case!
American Homeland Security regulations will still require that any bovines wishing to cross the border carry a valid passport.
The latest UN report on climate change says that global disaster is a safe bet if we don’t change our carbon-emitting ways by 2012. It’s all good for Canadians though, as the worst effects will be felt in places like Africa where people are used to dying of starvation, disease and general catastrophe anyway. Way to take one for the team, guys.
Work begins tomorrow on Toronto’s first school-condo project—part of a deal which saw the Toronto District School Board selling some of the land belonging to North Toronto Collegiate Institute near Eglinton and Mount Pleasant to developer Tridel. Tridel will build two condo towers on site, while also rebuilding the school. The new Tridel-Coke-Nike-Microsoft-Spirit of Free Enterprise Secondary School will include a football field and a theatre.
A baggage screener at Pearson Airport has been suspended after she modified her uniform skirt to make it longer. Halima Muse is a practicing Muslim who felt that the standard skirt was immodest. Current skirts for screeners are modeled on those from the original Star Trek TV show.
And Spacing has selected winners in their “My Toronto” video contest. Jury notes include the encouraging observation, “Overall disappointed with the quality of submissions.”
Pearson Airport reduces landing fees. The move was cheered by airlines, who can now drop their prices accordingly. Oh, wait, they won’t do that, they’ll only drop their prices by maybe about ten percent of what they could with the savings, and pocket the rest. Capitalism works!
Stéphane Dion says Canadians don’t want another election right now; thus, the Liberals won’t challenge the throne speech. More accurately, the Liberals don’t want another election right now. Because––and in a country with Stephen Harper, this is sad––they would lose. Oh man, would they lose.
We need a Canada-wide pandemic strategy, say the experts. Pah, experts! What do they know, with their expert-ness? Good ol’ common sense and gumption always served me just fine for medical needs, and other than that leg rotting off, it’s all been swell.
Thanks to one quiet member of council, David Miller’s new tax plan might pass after all. Councillor Mark Grimes, previously most notable for being Homer Simpson’s enemy, proposed a compromise plan that eases the land transfer tax slightly, particularly for first-time buyers of homes.
Finally: it’s time to vote in Spacing‘s MyToronto video contest. (And I bet it gets more votes than MMP did. OOOH BURN.)
