Call us crazy (or suicidal), but we here at Torontoist can't get enough of the living undead. Whether they be dancing, attending film festivals, marching through our streets, or saving a kitty or two, we can't get zombies out of -- or away from -- our brains. That's why we were delighted to hear of yet another horde descending upon our populace. At 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, 100-300 zombies will rise from their graves and gather... [continue]

A six-member jury announced the winner of the Nathan Phillips Square design competition last night. The city plans to rely on public and corporate donations for the remaining $24-million it needs to complete the project. For a thorough write-up on the new design, check-out our coverage. Despite the efforts of two high-angle specialists on Tuesday, ice still clung to the CN Tower yesterday. Tower officials refuse to name the company behind the work, citing "liability... [continue]

Toronto city council has approved a new design for the city's street-name signs. The city replaces roughly 2,000 to 2,500 signs each year anyway, so the new design will be phased-in gradually. Fortunately, it looks like this may not be as large a waste of taxpayer funds as one might expect. Federal Court Justice Carolyn Layden-Stevenson ordered the release of Toronto terrorism suspect Mahmoud Jaballah. Jabllah was held for more than five years without... [continue]

Police have closed the Gardiner Expressway after baseball-sized chunks of ice began flying off the CN Tower. Flying chunks of ice? Closing the Gardiner? Good ol' Mel would've just brought in the army and called a wrap on the day. Power has finally been restored to homes affected by last Thursday's ice storm. The only people who could possibly still be without power are those who have failed to notify Toronto Hydro, a spokesman... [continue]

Opposition parties are crying foul over Harper's use of military jets. After accusing the Liberals of overusing the jets for personal business during their time in government, Harper used one to fly his son to Toronto for a Leafs game. Pot, meet kettle. A lethal bacterial strain common in hospitals has hit Mississauga. According to the article, C. difficile is spread through fecal matter. We don't even want to know what's going on in our... Gas shortages continue to plague Ontario and Quebec and it isn't getting better anytime soon. Hybrid owners laugh manically as the world slowly crumbles around them. Mad Max-style mayhem ensues. Mayor David Miller unveiled his plan to bring a one-cent share of the GST to Toronto. Miller's secret weapon? Green-coloured buttons and posters. Predictably, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty responded with a resounding "no way man." Sources close to the Mayor say he will counter with... [continue]

In the fall of 1979, 21-year-old Terry Fox, recovering from a recent lower-leg amputation, devised a plan to help support the thousands of Canadians who, like him, had faced off with cancer. He would run across Canada, beginning in St. John's, Newfoundland, and wrapping up on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Figuring the journey would take roughly five months, Fox hoped to raise $1 for every Canadian man, woman and child. The Canadian... [continue]
