Where to Observe Remembrance Day 2013 in Toronto
With Remembrance Day falling on a Monday in 2013, many services are taking place over the weekend. The City of Toronto has a partial list of community observances here.
There are also some special events happening over the weekend, like a comedy fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors charity, and a fundraising performance of R.C. Sherriff’s play Journey’s End, with all proceeds going to the Royal Canadian Legion.
For the actual morning of November 11th, here’s a partial list of prominent services:
The Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival Casts Mental Health Issues in a New Light
Since its inception in 1993, the Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival has delivered on its complex mandate: presenting cultural representations of mental illness and addiction and then contextualizing them through post-screening discussions. This year’s lineup might be the festival’s most stacked yet, with screenings on a range of issues and in a variety of genres.
Slammin’ Jammin’ Comedy Fundraiser
Theatre and basketball merge in the 6th Man Collective, whose most recent project involved a theatrical presentation on a park basketball court. To fundraise for its next project, the group is taking the game inside and onto screens, for the Slammin’ Jammin’ Comedy Fundraiser. There will be an NBA Jam Wii tournament and many hilarious competitions and guests—including Ennis Esmer (CTV’s The Listener), Emma Hunter (Just For Laughs), and Franco Nguyen (2013 Cream of Comedy finalist). It’s $10 to watch the tournament and special performances, or $20 if you want to get in the game.
Tales of Question Mark?
The Tales of…An Evening of Storytelling series celebrates a year of comedic yarns at the Rustic Owl with a packed bill, including Kids in the Hall‘s Scott Thompson and Paul Bellini (who is also a storytelling regular), clown performer Precious Chong, Sage Tyrtle, and more. Hosted by Robert Keller, the event will feature comedians digging a little deeper for more personal stories in this intimate venue.
