Duly Quoted: Mayor Rob Ford, on Rehab

Ford provides details about his "working rehab," insists he'll be back to "kick butt."

“Rehab is amazing. It reminds me of football camp. Kind of like the Washington Redskins camp I went to as a kid.”

-Mayor Rob Ford, speaking to the Sun‘s Joe Warmington about his experience of rehab. Ford, currently on an official leave of absence, would not reveal his location, but indicates he is attending group meetings and one-on-one sessions, and exercising daily—he is also, apparently, still making calls to constituents: “I am getting help, but I still want to help,” he told Warmington. And while he insists he’s committed to his treatment, he’s also adamant he’ll be back for the election. “Of course I am coming back,” he said, “and I am going to kick butt.”

Does Rob have that type of amnesia that stops you from forming new
memories? Is that why he seems to be a teenager trapped in the body of
an adult and refuses to learn from past (forgotten?) mistakes?

    • tomwest

High blood alcohol impairs memory formation. (That’s why if you drink too much, you can’t remember the events the next day)

    • Michael Methot

In addiction circles there is a common view that maturing ends at the age that addiction begins. RoFo could be stuck in adolesence.

  • Steveinto

Shouldn’t be surprise that this ‘rehab’ thing is not real. Sighting will surface soon enough.

    • http://www.twitter.com/ohladyjayne allisonjayne

He was apparently spotted at a Tim Horton’s in the Junction last night???

      • Jacob

As much as it would be so delicious if this were true, it falls under the same probability as Elvis sightings.

        • mytwocentsworth

Doug Ford says he was at Timmy’s, not Rob. Could that be?

          • vampchick21

Nope. He was in city hall chambers at 9:45am, the sighting was at 8:45am and Doug was in a brown suit, not a black suit and not in a grey sweatsuit. Doug be lying. Not surprised.

    • bobloblawbloblawblah

CBC was reporting that he’s been seen around Toronto. Rob’s idea of Rehab is probably to have a long talk with his mom.

    • rich1299

He might be in rehab, after I read this in the Sun Ford did get some of the details right but I find it hard to imagine any rehab would allow a patient to make work related phone calls. Of course knowing what a pathological liar Ford is he may very well just be hiding out and got some of the details from people who’ve actually been in residential rehab or just got the info from a website.

  • Graeme

    I’m giving 3-1 he’s at the cottage, 5-1 he’s at a resort, and 3-2 he’s in Kathy’s Basement. Who’s in?

    • OpportKnocks

You forgot the enabler-in-chief’s house, mamma Diane. “Robbie, I;m going ut, need anything at the store?”

  • JC

Pathetic tool. Any doubts this was a cynical ploy to escape his latest exploits are cleanly washed away to anyone with a brain, so Ford Nation is safe.

  • Notcleverguy

Seriously, what kind of rehab has it’s patients talking to their worst
enablers, news outlets and people from work? I’m guessing the kind that
has wine tastings and pub nights.
I really don’t think he’s in any sort of rehab, but rather taking a long paid vacation. The Ford long con continues.

    • OpportKnocks

“It’s worth every dime, every dime,” he told the Toronto Sun. “A hundred grand is cheap. It’s a steal.”

…. so my guess is it is the kind of rehab that for $100k will provide a receipt and a cover story.

  • dsmithhfx

    The inmates are in charge…

  • SonuvaScrimbro

“It reminds me of football camp. Kind of like the Washington Redskins camp I went to as a kid.”

Which of course just cements his cred as a man of the people who understands their struggles to put food on the table. (facepalm)

  • SonuvaScrimbro

“He is also, apparently, still making calls to constituents: “I am getting help, but I still want to help,” he told Warmington.”

I am calling complete bullshit on that. I’m no recovery expert, but isn’t one of the rules of being in rehab that you’re supposed to be cut off from all potential sources of stress that may have helped lead to the addiction in the first place? For that matter, how does he fit his “constituent calls” into what’s presumably a very busy schedule of therapy and exercise?

    • https://paul.kishimoto.name/ Paul Kishimoto

Disqus ate my comment when this was first posted, but roughly: Talking to constituents probably help him temporarily avoid thinking about who he is, and what he’s done.

      So, I agree, counterproductive—but not because they’re a stressor.

      • dsmithhfx

“avoid thinking about who he is, and what he’s done”

        He’s never demonstrated the capacity.

        • tyrannosaurus_rek

On the contrary, he avoids thinking whenever possible.

        • https://paul.kishimoto.name/ Paul Kishimoto

Sure, but that’s the point of rehab.

Isn’t it? Or maybe I’m relying on impressions of AA:

          8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
          9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
          10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

…and he is instead going through boutique rehab like the celebrity he’s become, in which case we can expect many happy returns.

          • bobloblawbloblawblah

Well, now we know what it’d be like to have Lindsay Lohan as Mayor.

          • rich1299

Most rehabs, that I’m aware of anyways, are based on a medical model and don’t use the 12 steps of AA. If they want to get some funding from OHIP they need to follow approved medical treatments for addiction. They may encourage their clients to attend AA or NA or whatnot in addition to their rehab program though. For some people it takes many years of intense effort and repeated trips
through the program to be able stay sober. Some will never be able to
stay sober no matter what. Rehab is just the beginning of the battle for
sobriety and there is no cure for addiction. .

Residential rehab is mainly educational to help people understand addiction, how whatever drug affects them, what they can do besides use, stress reduction techniques, and exercise. The main thing is learning relapse prevention, recognizing what puts you at risk of relapse and how to cope with the urges or cravings to use again.

Ford never actually said he was going to enter a rehab program when he left, he just said he was going to receive professional help for his problems. People assumed that meant rehab considering what he was running from. The last time Ford said he’d get professional help he hired an exercise coach. This is the first mention from Rob Ford himself of having anything to do with rehab but perhaps his idea of rehab is just resting and laying low.

Even if Ford is in rehab and does manage to stay sober he’s still an incompetent bigot unfit to be mayor.

          • https://paul.kishimoto.name/ Paul Kishimoto

Thanks for the info—thankfully, I haven’t had to witness anyone’s drug addiction first-hand, so I really had no clue.

  • OgtheDim

You know, I’ve never been in rehab. I doubt many of us have. I’m
seeing a lot of discussions that sound like they come from experiences
    of Reality TV.

Has anybody who actually has experience of local
rehab set ups, either personal or from working in rehab centres,
    commented upon all this stuff?

    • Notcleverguy

      Yes.

    • Steveinto

I have seen an number of posts that say they have that knowledge and confirm the lock up scenario,

      • Notcleverguy

Well, while Ford’s many habits including crack probably need the dedicated emitted type of serious rehab, it is clear that is the path he has not chosen.
However, no real “rehab” would let him continue to talk to news outlets, enablers and do work “calling constitutes”, all rehab attempts to not distract you from focusing on recovery.

It sounds like Ford is doing nothing more than going to the gym and attending the odd AA meeting. That might work for sum, but he is far too messed up for that. Look for some messy, ugly relapses in the near future.

    • OgtheDim

      Ok, cool.

      Links?

I’d like to have facts to back up critiques as against “well,
it shouldn’t be” twitter posts that the Fordinsta’s can whistle past and
      whine “Just leave him alone!”

      • dsmithhfx

There’ve been several articles in the local papers ever since the Ford rehab thing came up a week ago (or whenever). Basically Rob is being sacrificed on the altar of his family’s ambitions. Look for Doug to step up as surrogate candidate soonish (already testing the waters, obviously). He may need to leak another video or three first…

Do all the Chowabungas talk to themselves the way you do?

      • rich1299

All of my posts relating to addiction and treatment are based on my personal experiences or those of others in group treatment, plus what I learned going through treatment, 3 times through the program as an outpatient and once as an inpatient. I’m now a little over 5.5 years sober, you won’t hear from those still using. The stigma is much less after you’ve been sober for a while.

I only know of CAMH’s treatment program, as well as one of their predecessor agencies ARF (Addiction Research Foundation). We were allowed to make phone calls at certain times though cell phones are banned. Obviously we weren’t supposed to be calling anyone we used with or dealers. After the detox period, which could be done at home or in hospital, something I doubt Ford would have to go through since it appears he’s not physically addicted. Psychological addiction is still a very powerful thing regardless and the hardest part for even those physically addicted to go through. Once you’ve detoxed you’re technically no longer physically addicted though the changes to your brain chemistry and structure are still present.

Anyways after the detox period inpatient rehab can certainly be a very positive thing. I can understand why Ford would call it “great”, if he is actually in a residential rehab program. Your hopes for a new life free from addiction are very high. You can make close friendships while in rehab since you discuss things in group without fear of judgement or stigma that you’d never consider talking about with friends or family. It can be a very liberating experience especially if its not your first time in group treatment and you aren’t horrified by the thought of being there or are just comfortable in such situations. Its very helpful to know you’re not alone, that others are going through the same thing and truly understand where you’re coming from.

The degree of honesty required for treatment to work is difficult for many people to manage. Group treatment is usually the most effective since its always easier to lie to yourself than to anyone else. In group you can more easily recognize your own lies when someone else tells them about themselves. Its always easier to see things from the outside instead of the inside. “A fish only knows water when it discovers air”

As for links I’m not sure if there will suit your purposes but here are some.

Why should we trust or believe anything either Rob or Doug Ford says? They have proven to lie and be untruthful so many times about so many things. Who actually believes verbatim what either Ford says?

Believe me, I am the first person who’s willing to listen and give people the benefit of doubt. However, when there is a pattern and a track record of so much lying and dishonesty, what other conclusion can you reach, than that this is yet another ruse, that the Fords are trying to pull off.

  • NO MORE FORD

Did I hear correctly… did Rob Ford call his reporter friend to tell him that he got a ‘slap on the wrist’ for speaking with the reporter friend earlier in the week? Is he that ignorant that even within a few days at supposed rehab he’s not following the facility’s rules for recovery. I can’t believe is really at a true rehab facility…and I can’t believe that no one at City Hall is pushing for verification…. how many times does Ford get a ‘pass’ ?
