Scene: The Toronto Maple Leafs Snatch Defeat From the Jaws of Victory

After leading for most of the game, the Leafs lost to the Bruins and eliminated themselves from this year's NHL playoffs.

WHERE: Maple Leaf Square

WHEN: Monday, May 13

WHAT: Thousands of fans gathered outside the Air Canada Centre Monday night to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Boston Bruins in game seven of Toronto’s first NHL playoff series in nearly a decade. The Leafs led for most of the game, only to watch a 4–1 advantage melt away in the final minutes of the third period. Not long afterward, an overtime goal by the Bruins put an end to hockey season in Toronto. Click through the image gallery for a look at how the die-hards handled the elation and the crash.

On another note, since when is a public square licensed?

    • tyrannosaurus_rek

And when can we extend the licensing to all public squares and parks?

      • HotDang

In my experience you won’t be charged with drinking in public as long as you have proper comportment.

        • tyrannosaurus_rek

In my experience, police will drive their cruisers right up onto the grass circle at Trinity-Bellwoods to caution picnickers (through the car window) against visibly drinking in public.

Until any of Officers Having-a-Bad-Day, Haven’t-Met-My-Quota, or Just-Don’t-Like-the-Look-of-You show up and start handing out tickets. Fucking Ontario.

    • Treptower

Oh don’t worry, the beer area was caged-off (literally) and you had to line up forever to get in. Massive security, wrist bands, $9 cans of Coors Light and Canadian. It had all the charm of Guantanamo Bay prison. Fucking Ontario.

The sad toddler is adorable. You have to feel bad for anyone being raised as a Leafs fan. Set up for a lifetime of disappointment.

    • torontothegreat

I think having parents who are willing to have their child “raised as a leafs fan”, or any sports team, would be bad enough, regardless of how well the team does…

      • AlyssaMoh

Exactly! Let your kids chose who they like. Montreal will always have my heart, even though the playoff were an injury-laden disatser

        • torontothegreat

Or “what” they like… Which was more to my point…

          • AlyssaMoh

That too. Too hockey-centric, forgive me, ’tis the season.

Though there is a difference between encouraging a kid to like a sport, and forcing them to endure it. There isn’t anything wrong in exposing a child to a variety of activities, especially if the parent figure is enthusiastic about it, and if hockey fits that bill that’s alright. Its leashing a child to sports, music performance, dance, ect no matter what that gets to be a bit much

That’s a conversation that went into strange places.

          • AlyssaMoh

yeah, no kidding. this is so much easier on reddit…

          • vampchick21

I just think the subject matter being touched upon would be better discussed in some other context than what sports team should be cheered for.

          • AlyssaMoh

            Works for me.
            GO LEAFS!

          • vampchick21

            (next year….lol)

      * wrong again.

it’s actually a woman who’s a freakin’ trooper. don’t know her name but she’s been to every leaf’s tailgate party since the playoffs began because that’s what she wants to do. no priorities out of whack – just a fan hooked on something. that moment you see was when everyone was visibly shaken up and rattled.

  • Jimbeau

“Eliminated themselves”? Uh, nope. They were eliminated by a better, more experienced team with lots of character.”

    • Winkee

And some conveniently missed calls. JVR’s broken nose should have warranted a double minor if not a 5 and a game.
