Extra, Extra: Fired Managers, Gutted Newspapers, and Unreliable Internet Providers

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not miss.

The Leafs are under new leadership. But why did Burke have to go? Photo by {a href=""}bukharov{/a}, from the {a href=""}Tornotoist Flickr Pool{/a}.

  • Leafs general manager Brian Burke’s sudden firing has had some time to sink in, and now here come the leaks. According to “sources,” Burke’s dismissal had a lot to do with the fact that his team’s new ownership thought that he, personally, was a jerk.
  • Remember t.o.night, the evening freebie newspaper that burst onto the scene in 2009 with a bunch of republished BlogTO articles in its pages and an army of people dressed up as old-timey newsies to hand it out? Its print operation is now being gutted by new ownership. Is anyone going to miss it? Anyone? Well, maybe these people.
  • The Grid‘s Mensch of the year, as elected by its readership, is Olenka Kleban, maker of the Rob Ford butter sculpture at last summer’s CNE. At least she’ll have something to put on the bagel-shaped trophy.
  • Rogers customers experienced a widespread and prolonged internet outage last night. As you might expect, Twitter did not react well.
