Global Maps the Homes of Toronto’s WWI Dead

A screenshot of Global's map of Toronto's WWI dead.

Here’s something interesting to play with, should you find yourself with any spare time to kill today (which is Remembrance Day, lest you forgot): an interactive map from Global that maps the next-of-kin addresses of most of the Torontonians who died in the First World War. It’s a sequel to a similar project done by OpenFile in 2010, which mapped the homes of Toronto’s Second World War dead. Both maps were put together under the supervision of the same guy: map-and-data wizard Patrick Cain.

When you say the map is “a sequel to a similar project done by OpenFile in 2010,” you mean it recapitulates all the original map’s errors of scale and stands as a perfect example of why “data journalism” practised by pretty much anyone who isn’t Adrian Holovaty is a failure.
