Xavier Dolan has already taken three films to Cannes, and was justifiably aggrieved to miss out on a spot in the Competition with his latest, Laurence Anyways, which was relegated to the Un Certain Regard sidebar. And now we’ve gone and added insult to injury by lumping him in with three first-timers, and a host of shorts, as we rate TIFF selections from some tyro Canadian talent. Oh, the perils of being a 23-year-old filmmaking prodigy.
