Scene: Aboard the Tall Ship Playfair

WHEN: Saturday, May 26

WHAT: The Playfair, a brigantine operated by the 50-year-old not-for-profit Toronto Brigantine, is a training ship for youth. Officers and crew ranging from 14 to 18 years of age take the ship on a variety of multi-day journeys each summer, both to learn how to sail and, naturally, to build character. It’s a bit like a floating summer camp. We caught up with the Playfair‘s latest handlers as they sailed near the city’s shoreline this weekend.

    As someone who sailed on the ships (and worked many wintery offseasons on the shore), I can say that this program really does make a difference in the lives of the kids who attend.

    I spent many years aboard these ships in my youth, and was the Bosun on Playfair in ’92 – can’t say enough good things about this program. Highly recommended!!
