It's time to shake off that upbeat weekend vibe and settle into the dull underlying sense of doom that marks the start of the week. It's Monday! Today: missing Toronto teen Michelle Yu turns up in BC; Toronto police use-of-force incidents on the decline; Mayor Rob Ford not alone in his decision to skip Pride; The City was one brother short on Sunday; and winter weather makes a chilly return.

Missing Toronto teen Michelle Yu has made contact with her family to let them know that she is in BC. However, this is no open-and-shut case, as police are still working to answer some outstanding questions, such as: Where exactly is she? What are the circumstances surrounding her disappearance? What will happen to all those #findmichelleyu-branded T-shirts? Are they now collectors items and, if so, how should they be priced on eBay?

Police use-of-force incidents have been decreasing over the past few years, according to the latest data released by the Toronto police. Between 2008 and 2011, the use of force has dropped by 29 per cent. This release of statistics downward trend comes at a time when public awareness and uproar about Toronto police killings of mentally distressed people seems to be at an all-time high, although in reality the number of those injured or killed is very low compared with the number of interactions. The police are looking at ways to continue in this downward direction, and are reviewing recommendations made by the Never Again Coalition. Since the most common use-of-force technique is pointing a firearm, perhaps that’s a good place to start.

When it comes to Pride, Mayor Rob Ford won’t be the only one at City Hall who’ll be opting out of the festivities. A number of city councillors are skipping the parade to be with family, or to, you know, attend events in the wards in which they were elected (on Canada Day? Elected-representative duties before family? Treason!) The majority of council does plan to make the long trek to the flag-raising ceremony. No word yet from Ford about whether he will be among those who do.

Mayor Ford missed his Newstalk1010 radio show yesterday in order to hit a local KFC. This unscheduled visit to the fast-food joint caused Ford to miss…wait, what? His brother made that up? He was just poking fun at the controversial the-mayor-visits-KFC-which-doesn’t-seem-to-go-with-the-whole-diet-thing video? Oh great, we had a string of jokes ready and now they are all ruined. Sick days just aren’t nearly as funny.

Remember all that unseasonably warm weather? Sigh. Those were the days. Guess what’s coming today? Snow! That’s right. Actual snow. Let’s just call it “thick rain” and get back to thinking about all the May flowers this will bring. Oh yeah, sweet, sweet flowers. That’s the stuff.
