Duly Quoted: Josh Matlow

“If we’re happy with the status quo, then we can drop this conversation. But if we are promising people that we are going to build subways, that we’re going to expand transit, that we want to improve state of good repair, deal with the current overcrowding on the current lines, then we need to get real. I’m just asking us to do that.”

—Councillor Josh Matlow (Ward 22, St. Paul’s), speaking on Metro Morning today about his plan to ask city council to study road tolls. Matlow intends to introduce a motion at the next council meeting, which he says will be backed by TTC Chair Karen Stintz (Ward 16, Eglinton-Lawrence), asking staff to explore the possibility of setting up a GTA-wide working group on road tolls as a new, dedicated source of revenue for transit (one which the mayor opposes).

Is this one of those 2/3rds votes, or a simple majority? I think it should pass either way, seeing as all he’s asking for is a measly study.

Can’t say for certain until the meeting agenda comes out next week, but likely a 2/3 vote (because Matlow is taking it straight to council when it is probably within the purview of one of the council committees, and needs to be heard there first—which, btw, is something councillors often do if they can’t get an item on a committee agenda, or if the relevant committee doesn’t meet for a while).

Someone had to do this. Let’s hope it puts paid to subways as a wedge issue, or we’ll see it tied to every mad and city-destroying proposal fronted by the mayors from now until the next election (e.g. Ontario Place casino).

There’s an idea! Make the casino a subway!

        … to Rochester!

I think you got that backwards…
