Scene: DIY Bike Lane at Dundas and Sterling

WHERE: Dundas Street West and Sterling Road

WHEN: 10:45 a.m. Friday morning

WHAT: In the spot where Jenna Morrison was killed on Monday—she on a bike, colliding with a truck on a road with no bike lanes—someone has, overnight, installed bike lane markings. Impromptu bike lanes have a bit of a history in Toronto, but in light of this week’s events this one is particularly apt. A memorial bike ride for Morrison is scheduled for Monday morning.

Hat tip to Martin Reis, who first spotted the bike lane markings last night.

I love how the fake bike lane makes the car lane so small that bigger vehicles will end up it spilling over onto the other lane, which is awesome and so safe!

@DryDry Are you high? Looks like a regular sized bike lane marking to me.

The remaining lane is too small for a bus or truck. I wish I were high.

Cyclists really should consider some sort of class action against the city and/or province. These deaths are preventable, “everyone knows” spots like this are dangerous and get reported, but nothing is done.

Absolutely. The same goes for the bullshit about the gov’t not thinking the said truck cover things were worth pursuing.

At this corner there’s plenty of room to widen the road by a few feet to accommodate a proper sized bike lane and a proper sized traffic lane.

We discuss it often enough at our meetings but no action has ever materialized.

I’m not entirely sure what bike lanes would have done to prevent this accident.

Both the driver & cyclist were turning right, which means the driver probably should have been occupying the bike lane. (Or perhaps not, if the truck needed to make a wide turn). Cars and cyclists shouldn’t be sharing the space in a case like this – someone, or both, wasn’t where they should have been, or wasn’t paying enough attention.

Bike lanes are great, but they have to end at intersections, which is where many accidents happen.

Maybe a bike box? The one at Spadina and College seems to work well enough. Except for the half-assed job the City did with the info placard to show people how to use it. Posterboard on the ground, really?

The other lane (northbound) is artificially narrowed by an island of stripes. That needs to be reviewed.

Not an actual bike lane, more like warning stencils that bikes are common in the area.

Part of the problem is driver training. In countries like Holland…drivers always shoulder check to the right just in case. I know if I was driving a truck in this city…I’d be using my mirrors every time I turn!
