“Recently in the news there has been some discussion about the TTC—let me assure you, no TTC routes are being cut. The TTC is implementing service level modifications which will have minimal impact on your bus schedules. Some service will be added to routes in January.

On Monday, the City will be launching the 2012 Budget… Our administration has used alternative, innovative strategies like monetization. Such strategies provide adequate and sustainable funding for the services that are important to you.”

—Rob Ford, in his weekly update to constituents about the goings-on at City Hall, telling us all to quit worrying cause he’s got things under control.

    “Let me assure you”?

    Ford must have hired Stephen Harper’s language coach. Maybe we’ll be seeing more of “Let me be perfectly clear, ,” or the old standby, “That’s simply not true,” given in response to true statements.

      More to the point, what is “monetization?” I know better than to ask Rob Ford.

        I take it he means leveraging hard assets – so things like the proposal to sell off 10% of Toronto Hydro, or selling City-owned property. Whether this counts as a “sustainable” way to underwrite the operating budget is, you know, a whole other question.

    I think even Ford has clued into the fact that his “guarantee” of no service cuts constitutes the rope with which his opponents will hang him in 2014. He’s furiously using every sort of obfuscation and the newspeak about “efficiencies” and now “innovative strategies” to cover for the fact that his guarantee has now been shown to be worthless – at least to anyone who understands the common English-language meaning of that word.

      It’s an excellent noose. Even Ford and his allies can’t deny that he said it, since video of him saying it is widely available. No-one forced him to say it. He said it of his own volition, probably hoping never to be called on it.

      The trick will be slipping that rhetorical noose around his neck. Ford is going to make it very hard for anyone to do it.

    Minimal impact, eh Rob? Some routes are getting cut back 2, 3 minutes. Last I heard, a 2 minute delay on Jarvis (which was supposedly caused by the new bike lanes) was unacceptable and you took drastic action to fix it.

    My bus is already crowded. One less bus is going to have big impact on my route. You’re not fooling anyone Ford.

    Here is an innovative strategy: Pay your fair share of taxes!

    Rob Ford: Take the bus on a regular basis like the rest of us peasants, instead of your gas-guzzling SUV so you can take on your cell phone.

      I agree that the administration is out of touch and incompetent, that people should not talk on cellphones while driving, that public transit is good, and gas guzzling SUVs are not so good, but I don’t think you spun these elements into a coherent argument.

    I had a bus route that used to be able to take me home at late hours in the night. They cut this so now instead of getting somewhat close to home, I have to walk in the dark an extra 15 minutes… this makes winter especially hard adding another 5 minutes. There are no other buses servicing my neighbourhood.

    Add this extra 15-20 minutes onto my 1 hour travel time is not my idea of an efficient use of my time. Over a year, weekdays only, that’s an extra 60-80 hours of commute time that I waste away on the T.T.C. They literally cut 2.5 days off my life.

    I suppose that’s what they mean by “minimal impact.”
