Book Tribute to Jack Layton Just Released

Hope is Better than Fear, a new essay collection that's just been released as an e-book, honours Layton's work and encourages Canadians to carry it on.

Canadians everywhere were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Jack Layton. The public outpouring of affection for the man and admiration for what he stood for was an extraordinary moment in our country’s history. What made it so unique was the melding of grief with optimism, the sense that we needed to celebrate a life dedicated to making a difference, that we needed to hang on to the ideas Jack embodied… Many Canadians found themselves asking how they could best meet the challenge he had set.

This book is one response to Jack’s challenge and Jack’s inspiration.

So begins the foreword to a new book just released in memory of Jack Layton, Hope is Better than Fear. The book, a collaboration between Knopf Random Canada and Doubleday, collects essays by a number of civic leaders, researchers, and activists who volunteered their efforts for the project. Authors include David Miller, Craig Kielburger, and Svend Robinson, with topics ranging from transit strategies to the environment, in a mix of personal memories and political advocacy.

For now the book is available only in electronic form (for Kobo, Kindle, and Sony readers); the publishers are considering whether to follow this with a paperback print run as well. Proceeds from sales will go to two charities selected by Olivia Chow: the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation and Shannen’s Dream, which fights for educational equality for First Nations children.

I hope the book reveals the name of the mysterious, secret, ‘new’ cancer that killed Jack… and when he was first diagnosed with this killer cancer. Canadians deserve the truth.

This is of no importance at all! It will not change anything whether we knew or not. Besides your tone is disrespectful and arrogant.

Olivia Chow explained that he didn’t want Canadian with the same kind of cancer to lose hope since it got him so quickly. It was a selfless gesture. And why in the world would it matter?

On the contrary, there was little that Jack did that was selfless.

Knowing him as I did I expect there was more in it for him to not reveal his cancer, such as protecting his image. Not that it really matters.

Didn’t you mother ever tell you “if you haven’t got anything nice to say”..but you are right about one thing it doesn’t matter …whether he chose to share his illness or not was his call and his call only…”knowing him as you did” you should know that he was human first and sometimes one is not ready to share the most private intimate details like their health with the world …so keep your arrogant comments to yourself….
Wow I can’t believe some people, the man is barely at rest before someone wants to (metaphorically…at this point anyway) write a Tell Tale book on the not so selfless Jack…Shame on you for disrespecting such a fine man.
Jack was a true humanitarian and a friend of the Canadian people…Jack will be remembered in the hearts of our nation.

Eh, nothing for iPad? Not that I have one, but I think a big chunk of the population is left out. And what about a print copy?

    • Eli-D

Kobo (and Kindle, as well, I think) has a free app for iPhone (iPod touch?) and iPad, which would allow you to read the electronic version on those devices.

      • TAJohnstone

is available on Kindle for iPad…$5.99

  • Orangehaze

Yeah wish I could get in paperback or for ipod. If you click on “in electronic form” link in the article above, Random House has a survey of whether you would puchase in paperback.

“Hope is better than fear”. That’s so insightful.

Many thanks to Olivia Chow and Jack’s many family and friends for their support of Shannen’s Dream. It is deeply appreciated and will truly help ensure that every First Nations child has a “safe and comfy school and culturally based education that prepares them for their dreams.”
