WHERE: College Street, at Bathurst.
WHEN: 10 a.m.
WHAT: The aftermath of a six-alarm fire at the building housing Canada Computers that started at around 11 p.m. on Sunday. As of 10:30 a.m. Monday, College was still closed between Spadina and Bathurst. The Star is reporting only minor injuries—three to firefighters. CP24 has video of the blaze; BlogTO, pulled away from watching Mad Men, was also on the scene last night.

Lovely. Not. Let’s hope the building can be completely restored and not razed with something architecturally insulting erected in its place (as with the mess now replacing the 2008 Queen-Ryerson fire). Hopefully the residents upstairs can return.
(Disclosure: that’s where I go for many of my computer accessories.)

Man, that was one of the least crappy computer places on that strip. I hope they can recover.

Come to think of it, earlier this summer I captured this building (OK, the eastern half) on Kodachrome — in, well, its better days.

    Ouch.
@Jason: CC is one of the few computer shops on the College strip that actually has other locations — quite a few of them. I like that they’ve got a usable website and fairly low prices (despite their growing size), so I can go in confident that I’ll be able to pick up what I want.

    Yes, this may be true.
Alas, this location is by far the easiest of theirs to reach by public transit. In a pinch, I once rode my bike north from Finch station to their North York location on Yonge. When shopping for that item, I realized that most of their other Toronto-area locations are suitable ideally for patrons using only their cars. It comes as small surprise that their College location was one of their busiest locations, seeing as it drew in customers within easy reach of the TTC’s core service area.
They might benefit from opening a Queen East store for serving the other side of the Don and using it as a central relief for their College location.

I just visited the Canada Computers site. They say they will be renovating this location. Hooray!

Well fuck, that’s the only place I’ve bought computer stuff for years now.

Glad to hear they’ll be renovating this location, I travel from south Etobicoke to there to buy computer stuff since its easier to get to by transit and they have a great web site, plus if they don’t have it some one in the near by shops will. I’ve made the hike to their North York store before, its not exactly a convenient location if you don’t have a car.

I once went to the downtown, Scarborough and North York locations in the same day, by bike and TTC, to buy discounted hard drives that were nearly sold out :)

They have been the gold standard for computer stores for years now. If your local shop won’t match the Canada Computers price, you should probably go somewhere else.
