One Doodle That Can't Be Un-Did

God, we feel gross even mentioning them—but, holy crap, the Junos. As NOW summarized yesterday, this year's nominees "make Canada look bad," which is not any sort of exaggeration: we double-dog dare you to make it through even the first two categories listed on the nominees website without breaking down and crying.

Sure there's a lot of crap ... we make a lot of crap. But dig deeper and there are some fantastic artists nominated. Besides, where else would a band with the name FUCKED UP be nominated for a top music award?

i thought it crystal castles' name came from the arcade game, you know, given how they love the chiptunes scene and stealing from it and whatnot. i guess not, it says it's from some animated TV show. either way. i don't believe their behaviour is worthy of the prestige of a juno award.

i don't know though, i'm inclined to believe some of that music must be good. is it really all that bad?

There are some great bands and artists here. Many are in the "lesser" categories, like roots, kids, blues, etc.

I don't agree that the Junos make us look bad, unless you concede that the Grammies make the whole rest of the world look equally bad.

Is there any doubt that the Junos are 100% controlled by record label marketing departments?

It's all just a big barely-subtle promotion for what they're currently selling.

Why are the Stills nominated as "new group of the year" for their third album?

I hope Plants and Animals wins that category.

Apparently the only prerequisite for being nominated for New Group of the Year is that you haven't been nominated for a Juno before.

I wish I was kidding.

I did, in fact, cringe when reading the lists. Why is Nickleback so popular?

And Lights? Her music is terrible.

I never understand this. The Stills are nominated for best new artist but they've been around for years. Still in Love Song was a radio hit in 2004.
