New York Wins; Localization Fails

Flattery will get you pretty far, and in Toronto—perhaps because of our terminal insecurity—it will get you even farther. Richard Florida has built a career on this. Now The Atlantic is hoping to cash in, too.

Perhaps realizing that it might be unreasonable to ask Canadians to shell out $6.99 to learn why what's bad for everyone else is good for New York, the cover of the March 2009 issue has been fine-tuned to appeal to the egos of our own Creative Class®. Hat tip to the Mock Turtle blog, which notes that "the article doesn’t mention Toronto" but is rather "focused on how the United States in particular can reinvent itself — which either has absolutely nothing to do with, or has some potentially negative implications (top U.S. scholars returning to newly-science-friendly, more tolerant homeland) for, Toronto."

And so, to The Atlantic, we put the question: Who's your city?

Wasn't this also the cover story in Toronto Life last month?

According to Florida on his blog, "There are actually several different covers including one for New York, Chicago, and my new hometown of Toronto, among others."

It doesn't seem to have occurred to Florida that his new hometown is not actually part of America.

I rather doubt Mr. Florida would be talking about this cover flap on his blog if he wasn't at least a bit embarrased by it. On the other hand, he's also not responsible for how his articles are presented when they go to press in one magazine or another.

Maybe the folks over at the Atlantic haven't heard of the internet and its curious ability to point these things out.

who's insecure? we live in the greatest city in the world.
