By George, I Think He's Lost It!

Today was not a good internet day for soon-to-be-former National Post technology reporter (and fleeting Torontoist contributor from way back when) David George-Cosh. In the opening shot in a brief but intense public fight on Twitter, one summarized nicely on MediaStyle, product marketer April Dunford earlier this afternoon called out an at-that-point-unnamed journalist: "Reporter to me 'When the media calls you, you jump, OK!?' Why, when you called me and I’m not selling? Newspapers will get what they deserve." George-Cosh was a touch displeased, outing himself as the "reporter," and telling Dunford "hey april - fuck you. seriously. fuck you" as she tried to calm him down.

George-Cosh would later delete the messages to Dunford, but as any good technology reporter ought to know there's no such thing as undo on the internet. (The exchange after Dunford's initial Tweet is above; the messages are currently still along the sidebar of George-Cosh's own blog, and their contents are much-discussed right now on Twitter.) George-Cosh did, however, announce earlier today that he's got a new job in Abu Dhabi, a place where he probably hopes that newspaper reporters can get some fucking respect and where marketers can "handle any heat from what u post and immediate hang up, fuck u."

God speed.

CORRECTION: FEBRUARY 11, 2009

This article originally read that George-Cosh took "the opportunity of his newfound Twitter infamy (Twittfamy?)" to announce his new job, but the Abu Dhabi update was posted to his Twitter just before his fight with Dunford. We maintain that it was superb timing.

Not to detract from the hilarity, but can you stop with the pompous corrections, please?

Oh man you kidding? Us Gothamist followers would love love love article corrections.

Thou they would probably be longer then most of the articles posted.

Hmm...not sure consultant comes out any cleaner than the Post reporter. This stuff lives on for her, too.

more posts like this, TOist... more posts like this!

Deciphering this made my brain hurt.

I can't resist: This is the English ability the Post looks for in its reporters?

Totally. I can't believe his "English ability".

This is so, so awesome. Just so awesome.

his blog seems to have been deleted altogether

I have no clue what this article about.

I don't understand anything in the article.

The Post apologized formally a few hours ago:

Today, a Financial Post reporter responded unprofessionally to another Twitter user on his personal Twitter account.

While the remarks were made on the reporter's personal Twitter account, the conversation first began when the reporter was acting in his capacity as a reporter for the Financial Post.

We hold — and will continue to hold — all our reporters to a higher standard in how they address anyone, in any forum.

We apologize for the reporter’s conduct.

I think he is fucking done, professionally!

Done professionally? Much worse has happened to much more important people and they've lived to do great things. This is simply a case of someone getting slightly carried away on an ill advised forum. He'll be fine, have a long and illustrious career and be better for it.

Correct... haha I often forget that some memes aren't... universal.

Let's hope not. The reporter in question has a reputation for exactly this sort of self-aggrandizing douchebaggery. It's simply, awesomely, out in the open now.

You cast him away like an object not a person. I know said reporter personally and can vouch for his general integrity and ethical standards. I have utter confidence that this will make him a better person; mistakes teach more than success. Surely you can relate.

I agree with wybenga. Although said reporter does need to work on his people skills, as indicated in his twitter tantrum, I do think he is a good reporter and I do think he will learn from this. He needed this wake up call, but I don't think he deserves to be raked over the coals like this...we all make mistakes. Give him a chance to redeem himself.

Who are these people and what do they have to do with Toronto?

This article seems more like journalists spreading gossip about each other than news.

Frank stopped publishing last year, so there's no "Remedial Media" section for them to send this stuff in to any more.

Gawker-gossip journalism.

I have never even heard of either of these people.

Poorly written article about a wholly unnecessary and irrelevant topic.
