Election-style signs urging people to "Vote Mookie Canadian Idol" have started popping up on the lush and exclusive lawns of Rosedale in the last few days. If you're like us, you're probably thinking, "Who the hell is Mookie?" And why are so many Rosedalians admitting to watching lowbrow reality shows? Shouldn't they be taking their doses of reality schlock in secret shame like everybody else?
The signs are part of Mookie Morris's Mom's campaign in favour of her son, one of the final nine contestants on this season's Canadian Idol. According to the Globe, her campaign includes placing signs in store windows and driving the Mookiemobile—the family's minivan adorned with "Vote Mookie" stickers—around the town. And, by our count this morning, at least a half-dozen lawns in Rosedale are participating in Mookie Madness. The signs have also been spotted across the Don Valley in Leaside.
So who is Mookie Morris, and is he worthy of our support? We're still not really sure, but his Canadian Idol bio says that he couldn't live without his ears and answers to Mookster and Mookmeister. What else do you need to know?

Canadian Idol is still on? And people watch it? Did previous winners even release albums?
I have seen these signs in Leaside and on streets near the Danforth too. I feel the same way about them as I do about elections signs - fucking eyesores.
They will get kicked over and end up littering the streets.
There is only one true Mookie - Mookie Wilson.
Why does an 18-year-old need a stage door mama who's so overbearing I'm having visions of Brooke Shields' mama?
Of course, it's also the empty-nest syndrome that could be affecting her.
Eighteen and still a sheltered person. Pity.
Alternate headline: She did it all for the Mookie
Your comparison to election signs is apt:
The mom in question is Julie Wang Morris, ex-publisher of the Town Crier group and former Liberal candidate for Broadview-Greenwood aka Toronto-Danforth (1999 provincial election.)
There was a whole Mookie street team down at Dundas Square today, and I asked them how often they'd be doing it, and they said whenever a vote night is happening. They were wearing shirts with quirky Mookie slogans and handing out flyers listing Mookie's motto ("No pain, no gain"), his most influential song ("Helpless" by Neil Young), his favourite film (The Graduate), and his thoughts on setting himself apart from the other Idol contestants.
Someone at a record company should hire his mom to promote their other stuff—the woman is clearly both organized and driven! I love it.
I have a Mookie sign, sorry TWO Mookie signs on my street in the beaches. I had to drive by slow to see WTF.
I was relieve there wasn't some stupid election. I've never watched Canadian Idol ( I hate Ben Mulroney and have tormented him whenever physically proximal) but now I will vote for Mookie.
Take a step out of Toronto for a few minutes and look across Canada at the small towns that other contestants are from.
St.Thomas had someone in season two or three, and if I do recall correctly there were lawn signs abound as well as support posted in place of the town hall's usual signage. A drive through Bimbrook, ON last week revealed that even the the fire hall was behind their local Canadian Idol contestant.
It's nice that Toronto can rally some community support. Sad that we're behind the small towns in showing it, haha.
Thanks for letting readers know why the ugly, offensive "Vote Mookie" signs are appearing in our neighbourhood. There's one on the Summerhill railway track bridge straddling Yonge Street. Sure, Mama is proud of her son but it doesn't give her the right to post the signs on public property. Plenty of us don't care one whit and the signs are just more graffiti in our city.
I watched Canadian Idol once. It's crap.
Agreed Lucycat. Let's stop promoting this it's embarassing. What's the big deal about Mookie does he give Toronto shout outs on the show or something?
