Toronto is #1 (On Wikipedia)

Toronto_is_number_1_2008_05_30.jpgWikipedia recently updated their list of the most prolific editors, and Torontoist was pleased to discover that at 181,749 edits, the most prolific human is a Toronto resident. Bearcat’s user profile describes him as "an underemployed gay freelance writer of Franco-Ontarian stock in Toronto, Ontario, who votes for the New Democratic Party, drinks Alexander Keith's, hangs out at the Church and Wellesley Timothy's."

Yup, that sounds like a Wikipedia editor. Good for you Bearcat! You are the third Canadian to hold this honour, giving us a gooey sense of pride all over. Not only that, but the previous top holder got the position almost entirely by fixing typos and formatting errors, a worthy cause, but it's nice to see someone who contributed content at the top (so take THAT Rich Farmbrough).

We’re taking Bearcat at his word that he is in fact from Toronto. The irony would be a little bit too much for us if he were lying about it.

Andrew Pulsifer is the brother of SimonP, a former title holder for the most edits on Wikipedia.

"...who votes for the New Democratic Party..."

I knew I wise to try and stay away from that site.

"He has no clear personal achievement that cannot be explained as the likely result of affirmative action."

Conservapedia seems too ridiculous to NOT be a joke.

Be afraid, proponents of truth and accuracy.

"Conservapedia seems too ridiculous to NOT be a joke."

Yeah, because anyone who would dare contradict the tolerant left is surely stupid and misinformed. If the creators of this website were based in Canada they would undoubtedly be dragged in front of the Inquisition... errr, HRC and swiftly silenced.

PickleToes, So "tolerant" is a pejorative term amongst extreme conservatives. I could have guessed.

The level of stupidity and misinformation on Conservapedia is extremely high, as evidenced by the page linked to by David. By associating yourself with this kind of crap you take away credibility from yourself. Judging by your closing sentence you aren't too concerned.

Ben: I'm not an extreme conservative. I don't view "tolerant" as a pejorative term either. Perhaps you didn't catch my irony but I was using the word to show how the tolerance that is regarded as a virtue by the left (and rightly so,) is contradicted by its actions. Specifically the way in which leftists are so intolerant of ideological diversity despite their great ethnic diversity.

I didn't say I liked Conservapedia. I consider it to be little more than editorials and spin. Political inclinations, as judgements of value, have no place married with encyclopaedias; a type of publication whose purpose it is to report information impartially.

As for the exact viewpoints expressed within Conservapedia, I can't say whether I agree with them or not since I haven't really looked at the site. Chances are good, however, that I wouldn't agree with it's positions because I'm not a neo-conservative or a Christian.

Conservapedia isn't a joke because of its political orientation; it is ridiculous because the editors choose to enforce that political orientation so as to obscure its encyclopedic function. I've recently spent some time reading its talk pages regarding various entries, and there are many edits that are petty by any standard, merely to prove a point about a "conservative" POV. I think a conservative alternative to Wikipedia is probably a good idea in that it challenges Wikipedia to do better, and it seems that some of the more involved Wikipedia editors [also been reading their talk pages re the Conservapedia entry] regard it thus, but as it is constituted now it's a ludicrous example of Neo-conservative talking points.

Also, the Conservapedia Liberal series of articles is fascinating.

Why are you feeding the troll?

rek: Please stop your ad hominem attacks. If you have something constructive to post, I encourage you to come out and express yourself. If you don't then I would advise you to sit quietly by yourself until you feel like being a nice boy.

"Why are you feeding the troll?"

Because of the movie review?

"Why are you feeding the troll?"

Because everyone knows hobbits aren't all that filling.

Why are you feeding the troll?
I'm just killing time.

Actually, I was the troll. Don't feed me!

mark0 - TASTES GREAT! [sorry, old commercial joke]
