Push It

2008_01_07menzies.jpgWith a title like Push It, could Whippersnapper Gallery's January group show be anything but real good?

The exhibit runs from January 10–26 and features 25 emerging artists, all Canadian and all chosen by the Whippersnapper team from an open call for submissions. Works range from Heli Prajapati's tranquil everyday-object photography to primitively emotional mixed media on canvas by Hayden Menzies, plus painting, sculpture, video and more. Whippersnapper won't take commission from works sold during this (or any other) exhibit, so all proceeds go directly toward keeping the artists from starving.

The gallery is located at 587A College Street, and the opening reception takes place there on Wednesday, January 9, at 7 p.m. Torontoist highly recommends going, as Whippersnapper openings are essentially hip house parties (think Pitchfork-approved background music, College kids in tortoise-shell glasses, and red wine in plastic cups).

"Homesick" by Hayden Menzies, mixed media on canvas, 2007.

That's a pretty cool picture, I wonder what it is all about.

Kinda looks like Aliens Attack! (and cause an epic flood) or (and steal all our water), because those are definitely tentacles.

I don't know about 'Sick Home' on the knuckles and the city looks like it's in bad shape.

Any ideas? If there were a class on metaphor recognition I'd fail it.
