Toronto Celebrates World Records Day With Giant Sock

2007_11_06humongostocking.jpgFresh from this year's successful stab at World's Largest Thriller Dance, Toronto is looking to weasel its way into the Guinness Book yet again. This time, with a big-ass Christmas stocking.

To coincide with the third annual Guinness World Records Day, the sock of honour will be stationed in the main lobby of the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts this Thursday afternoon.

While it isn't technically part of the record attempt, folks are encouraged to bring a large toy to help stuff the World's Largest Christmas Stocking, which will then be donated to the Salvation Army to help Toronto’s children in need. Shucks, ain't that sweet?

The first 1500 people to be awesome and contribute toys and not just gawk at the sock will receive a free ticket to Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, some sort of Sony prize package, and a photo of themselves stuffing the stocking for the good of the kids. Not only that, but there will be free cookies and hot chocolate! For everyone! Even you non-donors!

The event begins at 12 p.m., when the stocking will be hoisted twenty feet in the air and stretched out across the lobby in preparation for being crammed with toys, and ends at 4 p.m when a Guinness adjudicator will decide on the success of the record attempt.

Elsewhere in the world, the UK will be attempting to break the Fastest Time To Pull A Double Decker Bus With Ears record, the Largest Woolly Hat, the Tallest Stack of Poppadoms, and Most Concrete Blocks Broken With the Head. The U.S. will take on records for Sharing a Bathtub with the Most Rattlesnakes, Unveiling the Most Expensive Frozen Beverage, Most Apples Cut In The Air in One Minute Using A Samurai Sword, and the Smallest and Tallest Dogs Meet (wait, what?). All while South Africa nobly attempts to settle the score for World's Longest Bra Chain.

Go stocking, go!
