The Writing’s on the Wall…at Dupont & Spadina

2007_03_15messageboard1.jpg
You mean there was once a era when a message board was actually made of board? Bristol, in this case. An age when a message board thread was actually made of thread? To hold the pen, naturally. Although some might go for the crayon option.
Inane proclamations, words of wisdom, messy doodles, and for a good time call what’s-her-name – it’s a dive bar bathroom wall promoted to street-level! This message board doesn’t need a moderator, but it will need more blank space pretty soon. Who put it up, you ask? Perhaps the answer is on there somewhere. Feel free to contribute at the southwest corner of Dupont & Spadina before the vandals take the handles.

There should be one of these at every corner, on a pillar built just for that purpose.

It’s certainly a step-up from people spraypainting crude drawings of penises on walls. What is with that anyway? Every major city I’ve been to has penis graffiti.
I saw one of these sort of public scrawl boards somewhere and a lot of people were writing anonymous angry notes to their exes. It was almost like a strange sort of street therapy (including for some of those who read it).

    Low-tech Speaker’s Corner. Love it!

This is just a couple doors up from me and I’ve already written my neighbourly hello on it! It made me smile.
It’s also a nice conciliatory gesture to all the neighbours who have suffered through the thrash metal band that occasionally plays at their parties. I live just far enough down that it doesn’t bother me at all (actually, hearing live rock from an open attic window kind of cracks me up) but the cops have broken it up at least once.

A nice gesture, hopefully appreciated. By the way what is wrong with penises, they could be crude drawings to you, but to someone else they could be absrtact drawings?
    Cheers Xoro

They could also be symbols to ward off evil!

we actually considered not posting the message board simply because we know you hate our thrash metal parties.

I’m still very impressed that no one has vandalized it yet. it’s all been such friendly writing. and its not thrash metal – that’s the sound of kick ass rock music! some excellent bands reside in said house!

What a beautiful idea. What a great community builder.
Just a few weeks ago I was passing by this board when I stopped to read some of the writing. Within a minute, another person stopped. What was usually a mundane street corner has been turned into a public space.
There was no hostility between us. Right away smiles were exchanged; there was a sense of community through this shared board.
    Great job!
