Put Your Hands Up for Detroit

It has been one week since the inauguration of Crosstown, Toronto's newest underground (literally) dance spot. Formerly Healy's, and well before that, Bassmint, this fresh Queen and Bathurst club has gotten an exposed-brick and Edison-lightbulb makeover, adding to the raw, minimal feel of the place.
Party people seem to recognize every calendar holiday, and who better to celebrate last night with than Detroit techno legend Derrick May? The man credited with helping invent the genre spun 3 hours of straight bangin' dance tunes, the kind that make you nod your head to the washing machine the morning after. From old school acid techno to some surprise soulful house, Derrick May had the place on the (very dark) dancefloor until the lights came on. After his set, he and every serious global DJ and promoter of international nightlife are off to Miami for the 2007 Winter Music Conference.
Throughout the night, at least a dozen people could be heard remarking, "Oh my god, I used to party here when this place was The Bassmint!" Apparently, Christian Unabomber of Terror Inc. held a weekly party in the space that ran for seventy one hours, featuring greatest-of-all-time artists like Frankie Bones, Boo Williams and Disco D. That missing hour, as rumor has it, was to literally hose down the floor before they let everyone back in to do it all over again.
How did you celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Toronto?

Pssst. It was called "Bassmint" :)
ahhh the Bassmint. Just thinking of that place gives me skurvy!
Crosstown had a nice feel to it, could be the lost energy from all those parties back in the day seeping out from the cracks in the walls... would definitely go back.
Derrick May definitely threw down some dirty techno... but I've seen him have better moments.
ps. why didn't anyone kill the couple with that stupid blue, pen light?
hah, reminds me of my rave/loft party days in chicago as a teen. super cool.
You people talk about the Bassmint like it was so long ago. Pshaw!
Hell, I remember when that space was Death in the Underground, and the original location of Sanctuary, and the Soup Club, and the Slither Club...
I was at a punk show there once when it was either the Soup or the Slither, and there was a stream of water flowing out of one of the bathrooms that had several turds floating in it. Ah, good times...
I'm curious if there were any visuals. I remember Derrick May playing downstairs at Element with a couple TVs behind him showing animation of planes hitting the World Trade Center towers. It was pretty freaky.
