On September 11, 1973, Chile’s democratically elected president Salvador Allende was ousted in a coup d’état, and the brutal military dictator General Augusto Pinochet came to power. Patricio Guzmán’s documentary Nostalgia for the Light brings us to Chile’s Atacama Desert, which was once the site of a concentration camp run by the dictatorship and now serves as a mass grave. The documentary will screen for one night only to mark the 40th anniversary of the coup. Former Chilean refugee and community activist Carolina Gajardo will be in attendance, along with founder of the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture, Dr. Joan Simalchik.
