Attention meat eaters of Toronto: if you consumed bacon or other pork products last summer, you might have eaten part of a pig that is at the centre of a court case.

On June 22, 2015, Toronto Pig Save activist Anita Krajnc gave water to a parched pig on a truck headed for slaughter at Fearmans Pork Inc. in Burlington, Ontario.

She was charged with criminal mischief. Now, if convicted, she faces a six-month jail term, a $5,000 fine, or both for interfering with the use, enjoyment, or operation of property. Her trial is scheduled for August 24, 2016.

“Pigs are just like dogs; they are not property,” Krajnc says. “They are persons, in my point of view.”
