New CTV Morning Show Premieres Next Month, Whether You Want It or Not

Just pretend Canada AM never happened.

Hey, remember that tearful goodbye to Canada AM, a 43-season morning show on CTV, last month? Do you?

Wipe it from your memory. Ben Mulroney’s winning smile is here to replace everything and anything you loved about Canada AM. And, according to a Bell Media press release today, that smile is coming to a screen near you as soon as August 22.

Your Morning, CTV’s newest morning show, will feature Mulroney alongside former CBC Toronto anchor Anne-Marie Mediwake, CP24’s Lindsey Deluce, The Social‘s Melissa Grelo, and Calgary meteorologist Kelsey McEwan. It will air every day from 6 to 9 a.m. Pre-production is currently taking place at CTV’s Queen Street studio—and the cast is celebrating with a heavily Photoshopped fanciful team photo.

The show will take cues from our neighbours to the south: think of Your Morning as Canada’s Good Morning America. As a memo from Bell released just days after Canada AM‘s cancellation reads, Your Morning will “deliver an original perspective and unique insight into the stories of the day, while showcasing lifestyle topics of interests to Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast.” And if the press photos are any indication, it will be so fun you won’t stop smiling.

Upon announcement of Canada AM‘s cancellation, media specialists speculated that a new format—one that is lighter in tone, and focuses on lifestyle in lieu of hard news—could be more attractive to executives. “The success of morning news shows is that they don’t do a lot of news, there’s less and less reporting and more chat and interviews,” University of Toronto’s Jeffrey Dvorkin told the Toronto Star last month. “That’s the cheaper way to do television and a lot less costly than having a bureau in Baghdad.”

Perhaps Bell Media execs are banking on Mulroney’s ol’ Canadian Idol charm to spice up morning TV.

And remember to smile!
