Duly Quoted: John Tory, on Toronto Pride
Forget the politics, says the mayor.
“[Pride Toronto] should be careful not to become too political.”
—John Tory, according to the Toronto Star‘s Oliver Sachgau, in a profile of Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois. Tory’s controversial comment follows a movement of LGBTQ Torontonians seeking to return to Pride’s political roots after the deadly Orlando shooting at a gay nightclub on June 12. Toronto’s first celebration of Pride took place in 1970 at Hanlan’s Point as a political show of solidarity within the gay community.
