Yesterday’s Black Lives Matters protest saw a violent clash between demonstrators and police as the human rights group protested outside police headquarters. While police reiterated on Twitter that demonstrators were permitted to protest peacefully, the group claimed that officers attacked protestors, adding that some had been “punched, hit and physically assaulted.” The Black Lives Matter protest is calling on police to release the name of the officer who was cleared in the fatal July shooting of 45-year-old Andrew Loku. Leaders of the group say that they will continue to camp outside of the building until their needs are met.
An unattended suitcase prompted a campus-wide evacuation at York University as police and an explosives team were called in to assess the luggage. The abandoned suitcase was found in a second-floor washroom at York’s Vari Hall yesterday around 1:12 p.m. Police and university officials then later confirmed that the luggage did not pose a threat to safety. Classes resumed normal schedule at 7 p.m.
Longtime journalist and former anchor of CBC’s The National George McLean has died. McLean, 92, passed away last week in a Toronto hospital.
