Local cheerleader Drake is going to have a really good weekend. Not only is he hosting the NBA for all-star weekend, but he’ll receive the key to the city on Friday.
The recording artist/producer, Raptor booster, and Degrassi alumnus becomes the first recipient of Toronto’s key to the city since Rob Ford gave it to former deputy mayor Doug Holyday in 2013.
In a statement, John Tory wrote that Drake has earned the key for his cultural and civic contributions.
Drake is Toronto’s biggest champion: in his music, his mentorship of local talent and his presence on the world stage. He makes people feel good about themselves and their city, and he has drawn the eyes of the world to Toronto. He deserves our city’s recognition and our pride and I’m honoured to give him the Key to the City
Other recipients of Toronto’s key to the city include Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Ed Mirvish, Mickey Mouse, and the People of Prince Edward Island.
