Spotted: The El Mocambo Sign Is Removed For Restoration
WHAT: The El Mocambo Tavern at College and Spadina saw its distinctive sign removed yesterday, but it’s only going away temporarily. El Mo owner and part-time Dragon’s Den bagman Michael Wekerle clarified on Instagram that the sign is headed off for restoration, and will return with new LED light bulbs. Wekerle purchased the El Mocambo in 2014 for $3.78 million, saving it from closure at the eleventh hour. Notable bands and artists to play the venue over the years include the Rolling Stones, U2, Tom Waits, and Elvis Costello.
