Extra, Extra: City Councillor Plays Trump, Stowaway Raccoon Rides the Rails, and Santa Makes Charity Sexy

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Councillor Josh Matlow (Ward 22, St.Paul’s) doesn’t want Donald Trump’s name filling up Toronto’s skyline. “Trump Tower should change its name,” he wrote this afternoon. “Toronto is a diverse & respectful city. Donald Trump is a fascist.” He followed it up with a tweet saying he will be writing to the owners of the tower today. No word yet on his suggested name change, although ‘Matlow Tower’ would probably suit him just fine.
  • We wouldn’t be doing our work for Raccoon Nation if we didn’t share this breaking news: riders taking the GO train along the Lakeshore West line today encountered an unexpected furry passenger along for the ride. Passengers spotted a wayward raccoon sharing the coach with them, and officials decided to let the “freeloader” stay for the duration of the trip, so as not to cause delays. “Nobody checked to see if he tapped his Presto card,” joked Metrolinx spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins. It seems that with GO transit, raccoons ride free.
  • The Internet is going crazy over Yorkdale Mall’s Fashion Santa. The mall’s take on Old Saint Nick is making waves for his understated beard and couture fashion sense. The mall announced that for every selfie taken with the Santa using the hashtag #YorkdaleFashionSanta it will donate $1 to the SickKids Foundation.
