Under the Gardiner, We’ll Be Falling in Love
A new public space is coming to an underpass near you.

If you’ve found yourself singing “Under the Gardiner” to the tune of “Under the Boardwalk,” you’re not alone.
.@UnderGardiner project will create magical space beneath Gardiner, bridging divide between city & the waterfront.

This morning, Mayor John Tory joined philanthropist Judy Matthews, Waterfront Toronto CEO John Campbell, Toronto City Councillors Joe Cressy (Ward 20, Trinity-Spadina) and Mike Layton (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina), and Lai-King Hum, President of the CityPlace Residents Association, to announce an initiative temporarily called Project: Under Gardiner. Think NYC’s High Line, with a ground-level view.
The project is being made possible with a $25 million donation from Judy and Wil Matthews. It will involve the creation of more than four hectares of new public space and 1.75 kilometres of multi-use trail beneath that artery of public ambivalence that is the Gardiner Expressway, creating a waterfront walking link from Liberty Village to CityPlace. Naysayers might rest assured knowing the city-building clout behind the project: superstar planner Ken Greenberg is Under Gardiner’s head of design, and PUBLIC WORK’s Adam Nicklin and Marc Ryan are both on board to help flesh out the details.
