Sound Advice: Maylee Todd, Allie

#ICYMI, a roundup of noteworthy musical happenings in the city some call The 6.

Maylee Todd

Maylee Todd: The initial thing that strikes you about Toronto-based singer-songwriter and creative powerhouse Maylee Todd is her overriding vibe of intensity. With a sound that defies categorization—R&B? Pop? Disco?—Todd’s music swings between quirky, whimsical and carefree. New song “Lonely” pulses as it explores the melancholy emotional condition: “When will I not be, lonely?” Featuring a quirky interpretive dance by Minae Omi, the danceable number pops with assorted synths and keys.

Allie: When it comes to R&B-oriented sounds, there is a tendency for the genre to take a backseat to the more visible local hip-hop scene. Local artists like Allie—someone who’s been in the underground scene for more than a minute—have been working to change that. The young vocalist’s progressive, post-modern take on soul and jazz feels warm and cool at the same time; she’s been on her artistic grind and it shows on new track “Tundra.” The smooth slice of electro-R&B explores love and emotion post-breakup and is the first offering from her forthcoming Moonlust EP out November 25. The local soul scene is thriving; Allie is another testament to that fact.
