Extra, Extra: Norm Kelly Learns to Beatbox, Scarborough Hotel Could Become Homeless Shelter, Turbo the Goat Arrives in Toronto

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Everyone’s favourite Twitter dad Norm Kelly (Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt) continues his quest to become Toronto’s hippest councillor with a new YouTube beatboxing session. Norm sat down with Beatbox Canada to learn the ins-and-outs of the craft, in a performance that was surprisingly competent. (Okay, he mostly made just one sound, but the man is 74 for crying out loud). No word yet on when his inevitable mixtape will drop.
  • The City of Toronto may purchase a Scarborough hotel with the intention of turning it into a homeless shelter for men. It’s a move that comes as part of the City’s five-year plan to open up to 15 hostels to ease the pressure on existing shelters. The hotel in question, the Comfort Inn, would be renovated to accommodate 120 homeless seniors. The proposed purchase will be up for debate at the City’s executive committee on December 1.
  • Toronto is going crazy over a visiting animal—and no, the peacock hasn’t escaped from the High Park Zoo again. Turbo the Goat made his way into the city today using Go Transit, on his way to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, which runs November 6-15 at Exhibition Place. Travelling with much media fanfare, Turbo’s accompanying hashtag for the day has been #RoyalGoat. He’s already made his way down to City Hall to meet Councillors Norm Kelly and Mike Layton (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina), and plans to go to the CN Tower this afternoon. Personally, if we were animal royalty, we’d ditch the public transit and spring for a limo.
