- In the midst of Toronto mourning the departure of former Blue Jays-GM Alex Anthopoulos, a new interim GM has been named. Tony LaCava, familiar to fans as Anthopoulos’ assistant GM, has been given the temporary title. Mark Shapiro is now officially the team’s president and CEO, and John Gibbons will stay on as manager. Here’s hoping they can build on AA’s achievements—or, at the very least, not mess them up too badly.
- In today’s “good things happen to people who don’t deserve it” news, the Hydro One worker who was fired this May for defending the sexual harassment of female reporters has been rehired. Shawn Simoes, who told Citytv’s Shauna Hunt on live TV that the slur “Fuck her right in the pussy” was “fucking hilarious,” and was subsequently fired, is back on the job after an arbitration process. Simoes wrote a written apology to Hunt, which Citytv said she was “happy to accept.” Somehow, we doubt that.
- In an effort to stay competitive in a changing transit landscape, the starting fare for Toronto taxis has been reduced by one dollar, to a more affordable $3.25. The drop fee reduction was approved by Toronto City Council in September, and aims to keep things competitive for cab drivers in a city increasingly dominated by Uber (whose rides, incidentally, start at $2.50). As the fare machines have yet to change, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised with a smaller-than-expected tab at the end of your ride.
