Extra, Extra: Jose Bautista Talks Bat Flips, Toronto Hospital First for Non-invasive Brain Tumour Procedure, Day in the Life of John Tory

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • Not one to shy away from the spotlight, epic bat-flipper and all-around baseball hero Jose Bautista has penned a response to those who have deigned to criticize his infamous Game-5-ALDS-playoff bat flip. “When you’re in that situation, you’re playing a role in a show. I’m not Jose Bautista. I’m the guy trying to be the superhero. I’m coming through. I’m going to make something happen,” he writes. Bautista goes on to say that he wasn’t being disrespectful, but was merely caught up in the moment. Fair enough; maybe next he can respond to the diehard fan who liked the flip so much he immortalized it in ink.
  • Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hopstial has developed the first non-invasive procedure to treat brain tumours. Scientists at the hospital are using MRI-guided focused low-intensity ultradsound to target blood vessels in the area surrounding the brain tumour. The treatment, tested last week, was considered a success and will be tested on six to ten more patients in the coming months.
  • John Tory has been mayor of the 6ix for just over a year now, and in light of the anniversary, the Toronto Star documented a-day-in-the-life of our city’s newest mayor. From 6:10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., highlights include a morning subway commute, a community paper photoshoot, and the 41st annual Toronto Heritage Awards (hey, we were at those).
