In the news: trial underway for paediatrician charged in sex abuse scandal, Scotiabank drops sponsorship for Nuit Blanche, and Toronto remembers Michael Burgess.

Scotiabank officials have announced that the company will no longer sponsor Toronto’s Nuit Blanche all-night contemporary art thing. In a statement made yesterday evening, Scotiabank stated, “In 2015, we completed a review of our sponsorship priorities and decided that Nuit Blanche no longer aligns with our sponsorship strategy. We informed event organizers in February that we would not renew our sponsorship of this property after the 2015 event, providing event organizers with more than 18 months of notice.” Scotiabank says that it is helping organizers seek new sponsors.

A paediatrician with multiple sexual assault and sexual exploitation charges against female patients in their early teens has pleaded not guilty. Arturo Sanchez, 80, faces 25 charges against multiple women dating back to 1965. The investigation is ongoing.

A capacity crowd gathered at the Church of Blessed Sacrament Monday afternoon to remember famed tenor Michael Burgess, who passed away September 28 following a lengthy battle with skin cancer. Most famous for his role as Jean Valjean in the Toronto production of Les Miserables, Reverend Patrick Fitzpatrick, said of Burgess, “He is gone from our memory but his memory lingers on. We give thanks for what he meant in our lives. So once more, Michael, you gather us together.”
