Happy post-election Tuesday! In the news: Toronto goes crimson, Canada sees its highest voter turnout in 22 years, and the Jays seize another victory.

Call it a crimson tide, call it a super sweep. Whatever you call it, the Liberal party cleaned up in last night’s election, and Toronto fared no different. A number of favoured NDPers lost seats to Liberal candidates, including Olivia Chow, who was defeated in the new Spadina-Fort York riding by former city councillor-turned-Liberal Adam Vaughan.

It was an election that drew higher than average numbers of voters within, and beyond, Toronto. An estimated 17,546,697 eligible Canadians took to the polls, marking the highest voter turnout since 1993. As it happens, both elections took place amidst post-season glory for a certain Toronto ball team.

And about that local ball team: as yesterday’s election results were being tallied, the Toronto Blue Jays handily beat the Kansas City Royals in game three of the ALCS. “For us, personally, we needed to score anyway,” said Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “That’s kind of who we are.” And there you have it.
