  • The province has agreed to fund one cycle of in-vitro fertilization for eligible women up to age 42, increasing total annual IVF funding by $50 million per year, effectively more than tripling the amount spent on assisted reproductive services. Buns! Ovens! Families!
  • Teamwork pays. Proof: a group of 12 Markham co-workers claimed a record $60-million Lotto Max jackpot today. They all plan to continue working together at the Canadian Black Book car valuation company, though some admit they’ll be blowing at least some of their winnings on “cars and travel.”
  • Finally, here’s a video of Bill Blair getting his buns handed to him being thoroughly checked by Scarborough Southwest Green Party candidate Tommy Taylor during last night’s federal debate in that riding. Blair, the former Toronto police chief who thinks carding is no biggie, is the riding’s Liberal party candidate.
  • From today’s edition of 12:36, Toronto’s new lunchtime tabloid newsletter: Was it over when Le Chateau replaced the Salvation Army? When the neighbourhood got a McDonald’s? How about, as chronicled in Naomi Klein’s No Logo, that time in 1996 when the entire strip turned into a promotion for Levi’s SilverTab Jeans? One guy who watched it all, Professor Banana, did his last shift yesterday, as Active Surplus closed after 53 years. A planned consolidation with the second Active Surplus location, at 5601 Steeles West, has been complicated by the fact that the store is moving out of there, too. (Want more 12:36?
