Extra, Extra: Vital Signs Report Released, Czehoski Closes its Doors, and the Blue Jays Flag is Raised at City Hall

- Time to dust off that copy of Capital in the Twenty-First Century that you bought and never read. Today, the Toronto Foundation released its 14th Vital Signs report on the state of the city, and income inequality was its top concern. Toronto Foundation president Rahul Bhardwaj says: “We’re becoming a divided city. If we need to move forward and maintain our livability, we’ve got to become one place.”
- Czehoski is no moreski. The beloved Queen West institution has shuttered its doors six months for “reasons of breaches of covenants in (the) lease,” according to a notice posted to the former restaurant’s door. The eatery’s owner, John Schertzer, was sentenced to 45 days on a drug conviction in 2013 and was accused of assaulting a woman inside the restaurant just this past April.
- The local sports team is doing well, which means it is time for their flag to be raised at City Hall. With 2015 team anthem “Hooked on a Feeling” playing in the background, John Tory raised a Blue Jays flag alongside team mascot Ace. The team will host their first playoff game in 22 years on Thursday afternoon as they take on the AL West champion Texas Rangers.
- From today’s edition of 12:36: U of T students who like gender-neutral washrooms think a policy change will only lead to more trouble. The facilities have been largely segregated at University College’s Whitney Hall after female residents were filmed while showering last month. But some students surveyed by The Varsity think the change is a violation of trust and may even encourage more voyeurism.( Want more 12:36? Subscribe to it now.)
