We're halfway through September! Your news: Tory says no to the 2024 Summer Games, potential tolls on downtown expressways, and Peel cop headed for prison.

Will Toronto make a bid for the 2024 Summer Games? We’ll cut to the chase: Mayor John Tory is waiting until the last minute to say “no” to the Olympics, according to the Star. Other major players have advised against the bid as well: Premier Kathleen Wynne promised on Monday that the province would not “put itself forward and be on the hook for all the costs,” while former IOC member Paul Henderson says he advised Tory against making a 2024 bid.
Drivers in our fair city could pay tolls to use the redone Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, if councillors listen to a new City report. The report looked at both a possible per-use system, with an associated flat fee, or a pay-per-kilometre system. The study was commissioned by city council when they narrowly okayed the controversial “hybrid” option for the Gardiner in June.
On Monday, a five-year prison sentence for insurance fraud was handed down to Constable Carlton Watson, a Peel police officer. Watson has been receiving his full salary since he was suspended on Jan. 28, 2011, even though he was initially found guilty on 42 of 45 counts of fraud, obstructing justice and breach of trust in February. Three other police officers from the Peel force were found guilty of assault, receiving suspended sentences with 12 months’ probation.
