Weekend PANAMANIA Tip Sheet
You know what’s world-class? PANAMANIA’s music festival programming. Here’s our guide to the must-see free music shows of the day, every day, during the fest.
Chromeo
CIBC PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square
Friday, August 7 at 9:45 p.m.
Remember nu-disco? The backward-glancing dance genre was probably one of the better cultural entities to come out of the mid-late aughties and will also, as it happens, be one of the better offerings to come out of tonight’s PANAMANIA return. Montreal’s nu-disco superduo, Chromeo, will make you feel like you’re back in that delicious synth-funk, post-disco sliver of the early 1980s, whether or not you caught ’em the first time around.
Tanya Tagaq
CIBC PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square
Saturday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m.
There’s a lot that could be said about the experimental throat singer and 2014 Polaris Prize winner Tanya Tagaq and the electrifying, otherworldly live show she’s renowned for putting on, but maybe it’s just best to spare the semantics and suggest you check it out for yourself.
Janelle Monáe
CIBC PANAMANIA Live @ Nathan Phillips Square
Sunday, August 7 at 9:30 p.m.
Tuxedo-clad soul-funk futuress Janelle Monáe sweet-talked her whole audience into sitting on the dirty Kool Haus floor during her last Toronto stop. If that’s not a ringing endorsement for onstage superpower, what is?
