WHERE: Outside of the Consulate General of Jamaica, 303 Eglinton Ave. E.
WHEN: Wednesday, August 5, approximately 12:30 p.m.
WHAT: A crowd took to the outside of the Consulate General of Jamaica calling for a repeal of Jamaica’s “buggery” laws, which outlaw homosexual conduct. With a rendition of Jamaica’s national anthem followed by Bob Marley’s “One Love,” the pro-LGBT group protested the country’s decision to exclude an LGBT-inclusion ad from airing on TV, led by Jamaican-Canadian lawyer Maurice Tomlinson who spoke on the murder of 16-year-old Dwane Jones, a Jamaican trans youth murdered in an anti-LGBT attack in Montego Bay. MPs Craig Scott (Toronto-Danforth) and Cheri DiNovo (Parkdale-High Park) also appeared at the protest, calling for solidarity with LGBT Jamaicans.
