Extra, Extra: 416 Home Prices Go Up, Bonjour to Toronto’s Only French Bookstore, and Police Appeal to Drake in Muzik Shooting

Every weekday’s end, we collect just about everything you ought to care about or ought not to miss.

  • If you want to own a home in the city, you better get to buying—and fast. According to the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB), prices of Toronto homes are climbing, with the average price of a detached home up 13.3 per cent to $996,770, and condo prices up 6.1 per cent from the second quarter last year to $416,728. TREB Director of Market Analysis Jason Mercer said in a market report, “Condominium apartment prices have been appreciating at a moderate pace, on average, over the past year, especially when compared to low-rise home types like detached and semi-detached houses and townhouses.” Toronto, which accounts for 70 per cent of condo sales in the GTA, has seen a 14.4 per cent increase in condo unit sales year over year.
  • Pour l’ensemble de la population Francophone, Toronto will soon be getting a new French-language bookstore. The project, facilitated by the Alliance Française de Toronto, will be housed at 24 Spadina Road in the heart of the Annex, with hopes to open before the Salon du Livre de Toronto book fair December 2nd. Executive Director Thierry Lasserre said, “Today, people go on Amazon to buy French books, and that’s not the (sense of community) that we’re looking for.” Because we love IRL bookstores, we say bonne chance, M. Lasserre!
  • Toronto Police are appealing to Drake to help put a stop to gun violence in the city after a shooting at his OVO after party Monday night left two people dead and three injured. In a tweet, Crime Stoppers addressed the Toronto-born rapper, with hopes that he could encourage potential witnesses to come forward, by writing, “We need your voice to help stop the violence in Toronto – can we set up a meeting?” Police are also asking anyone with photos or videos from the Muzik Nightclub event to share their footage with police.
