Weekend Newsstand: July 11, 2015

News today: family and those close to last weekend's Etobicoke shooting victim Lecent Ross want a crackdown on illegal guns, the HOV lanes get an examination, and a rundown of the Pan Am Games' opening ceremony.

Some of the people who were close to Lecent Ross, the 14-year-old shot last weekend in Rexdale, are calling for police to crack down on illegal guns in the area. Ross’ volleyball coach, Nigel Barriffe, and her uncle, Troy Amos Ross, have both said they want to see fewer illegally obtained guns on the streets. Ross’ uncle has said he’d like a federal push against guns done in Ross’ name, while Barriffe said he thinks there’s been a growing acceptance of and interest in guns in Rexdale in the past two decades. Ross was shot once in the head with an illegally obtained gun but police haven’t said whether they think it was intentional or an accident.

The Globe and Mail asks if we should keep the newly implemented high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes past the Pan Am Games for which they were installed, and finds no clear answer. The question seems odd as the province has officially said the lanes are not here to stay, but it also seems odd that 235 kilometres of carpool lanes would be put in place and then removed after just a few months.

And, if you didn’t see it but wish you had, here’s an impressive summary of the Pan Am Games’ opening ceremony. It included Steve Nash, Andrew Wiggins, and a very impressive Donovan Bailey stunt double.
