That Time Gord Perks Told Off the Premier
A look back at a moment in history when the young then-activist took David Peterson to task.
You might say that we here at Torontoist are a little soft in the ticker, but we sure do love anniversaries. So it’s only fitting that we end the day with a look back at a moment in local history that happened exactly 25 years ago.
The day was July 30, 1990. Ontario Premier David Peterson had just launched a press conference to kick off his re-election campaign, when a scruffy young man appeared before him with a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist, broadcasting from the container a tape recording of the environmental promises Peterson’s government had made and broken. That young man was none other than one Councillor Gord Perks (Ward 14, Parkdale-High Park), who continues to wear his passion for progressive causes rather pronouncedly on his sleeve (and occasionally, on our digital pages). Happy briefcase-iversary, Councillor Perks! We tip our hats to you.
