Happy post-Canada Day! As we recover from the midweek dominion-praising festivities, here's what's happening news-wise: WestJet addresses a string of bomb threats, the Leafs make a big trade, and the Judy Blume shouts out Toronto.

Last night, a Toronto-bound WestJet flight from Vancouver was diverted to Calgary following a hoax bomb threat, marking the airline’s fourth false threat in five days. A statement released by the airline addressed the sudden uptick in bogus threats, concluding: “Safety remains our top priority and we will continue to be vigilant to keep our guests and our crews safe.”
The Leafs traded enigmatic sniper Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a package of prospects and draft picks, thus ending months of speculation and rumours surrounding their best player. The trade marks the start of their rebuild in earnest, and if you’re still a Leafs fan at this point then you’re probably in it for the long haul anyway, in which case you may as well see the team not take any shortcuts.
Oh, and Judy Blume has a soft spot for her Toronto readers. The beloved children’s (and grown-ups’) book author was in town Tuesday night for a talk and book signing at the Toronto Reference Library, then wished Toronto a Happy Canada Day on Twitter last night in a tweet that also contained the words, “Toronto – I loved you.” Swoon, basically.
