- The Senate’s communications committee is calling on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to find new ways to fund its operations and thereby limit funding received from the federal government. Senators are also pressing for the broadcaster to publicly disclose the salaries of its employees, in particular chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge, to ensure non-executives aren’t getting paid more than those working privately. The Senate report references scandals involving Jian Ghomeshi and Amanda Lang as a precursor to the call.
- Pride Toronto has angered several Canadian Pride groups after submitting applications to trademark the terms “Dyke March” and “Trans* March.” Pride Vancouver said in a statement, “The phrase Dyke March has been commonly used by radical, fiercely independent, grassroots organizations in Canada and abroad for decades,” continuing, “We strongly believe… they do not have any ethical or moral right or claim to the words ‘Dyke March.’” Pride Toronto has since stated they would withdraw the application.
- William Richard Turner, 47, a.k.a. the “Well-Dressed Bandit,” has been arrested in Nova Scotia in relation to a series of bank robberies in Toronto, proving that there are, in fact, worse names someone can be called.
