- Loblaw Companies Ltd. has announced plans to close 52 unprofitable stores across the country in the next 12 months. Though the company hasn’t yet released which locations are slated for closure, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications Bob Chant said the list of stores will include, “gas bars, Joe Fresh standalone stores and select pharmacies and grocery stores.” The move comes just four months after Loblaw announced a $1.2 billion plan for expansion.
- Lou Lamoriello has been appointed as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ new general manager, Leafs President Brendan Shanahan announced this morning. Lamoriello joins the Leafs as the team’s 16th general manager after having spent 28 years with the New Jersey Devils, where the defensive-minded president and GM won three Stanley Cups and earned 21 playoff appearances.
- With the help of Mazing, superhero alter-ego of Kensington hairstylist Matthew Genser, those in need of a haircut can get one, free of charge. Inspired by comic book movie Kick-Ass, Genser walks around Toronto offering free haircuts as a way to connect with people in the city. The streets of Toronto have never been safer, or, at least, more stylish.
